Transform Your Bedroom in Just 5 Steps

People commonly spend one third of their lives in their bedroom. It is a room where you can reflect your personal style in the colors, fabrics, furnishings and atmosphere. Follow these steps to create your dream bedroom.

Step 1: Remove clutter - Re-decorating (and even cleaning) a cluttered room is more difficult than necessary. Toss everything that doesn’t belong in your bedroom into a container. Tidy and clean your room (clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc.). Closet organizers and clear plastic tubs. are good investments to help with this. Remember, a place for everything and everything in its place. Decide on a place for each item.

Step 2: Furniture repair - When you look at your bedroom furniture, how does it look? If it is not in good repair, this is a good time to repair it. Hide imperfections on furniture using touch-up markers. If furniture is broken and not worth restoring, replace it. If your room is flexible enough, arrange the furniture in a new way. Creativity and functionality can work together. Try to balance the room. The bed is the star of the bedroom.

Step 3: Bedding - I recommend that you choose your bedding BEFORE choosing paint. Paint is available in all colors imaginable. Eliminate hassle and headaches. Use the bed sets you chose to help you select the paint color!

It’s best to choose TWO (or more) bedding sets at this time. Buying bed in a bag sets makes decorating (or re-decorating) super easy. Usually sets include matching sheets and pillow cases, a bed cover and pillow shams. It will be easy for you to change the look of the room if you have two sets (or more) of bedding.

While serving the same purpose, duvets and comforters are different. They are alike in some ways. They are insulation while you sleep. Duvets are usually white or off-white and should be used with a duvet cover. A duvet cover is a giant pillow case for duvets. Your duvet (or comforter) goes inside it so it’s protected. Duvets are not easy to wash. Duvet covers are. Just slip the cover off for laundering so you don’t have to wash the whole duvet (filling and all) each time. Duvets should only need cleaning every 3-5 years (some need dry cleaning).

Comforters are not just white. They are covered with the “fashion fabric” on the outside and do not need a cover. Standard home washing machines don’t accommodate bulky comforters well. Dry cleaning a comforter gets costly. Duvet covers can also be used over comforters giving them new life.

Select sizes of bedding carefully. Web stores offer a huge inventory to suit any taste. Before ordering know your mattress size. Take measurements of the length and width of your mattress and don’t forget to measure the depth or thickness as well. “Fitted” sheets come in many depths. A bed skirt’s “drop” is the measurement from the floor to the top of the box spring.

Step 4: Choosing Paint - For an inexpensive yet effective room transformation, be sure to paint the walls (and possibly the ceiling).

Enter the paint store armed with both new bedding sets. Get assistance. Choose a color that suits BOTH sets. Take the advice of the staff at the paint store when choosing a color to “go with” your bedding. In fact, it’s better if it doesn’t. Just find one that will compliment or contrast the colors nicely. Don’t be afraid to paint the ceiling a shade or two lighter.

Step 5: Complete the Look - After the paint is dry, hang pictures, paintings, and wall decoration if you desire. Install curtain rods, curtains, etc. and make your bed with the new bedding.

5 easy steps to a transformed bedroom: Remove clutter, repair and replace furniture, buy some new bedding, paint the walls, and add some finishing touches. Now you can claim you are a decorator.
